    Hooded Coasties

Hood to Coast - what a blast!  Of course those weren't my exact thoughts while I lie awake on a hard cafeteria floor hoping to sleep for a mere 60 minutes or while our van filled with the stench of sweat and my knees ached from too much pounding on the country roads, but as I look back on the 30 hour extravaganza I have to say "what a blast!"

We had a great team this year and our van rocked.  We all bonded, I'm sure much more than some of us wanted to, but I'm already looking forward to next year.  A few notes from the road

    Indoor soccer you say?

    Don't mind if I do.

I must say I'm quite excited about the indoor soccer league I joined over the weekend.  I can't honestly say that I've ever played a day of soccer in my life, but hey, I'm excited nonetheless.  Maybe I'm inspired by the beautiful David Beckham or maybe it's because I drive the ultimate soccer mom car.  Whatever the reason, it will be a blast.  I've been assured that I need not be good, just a girl.  Okay, I can swing that.  I knew it was for me when they said they meet up for beers after Sunday games.  YES!  Why didn't I join sooner?!?    Any way, I was so excited that I jumped online when I got home and ordered all the gear from Swoosh.com.  Little did I realize that the order confirmation went to my husband's e-mail address.  Whoops.  Can't keep that little shopping excursion secret. :)

Speaking of shopping excursions, I stocked up on a few goodies for Hood to Coast which is coming up in a few days.  11 to be exact.  I'm super excited.  Yes for the clothes, but also for the run.  We have a great team this year and I'm pumped to get out there.  Lindsay has been the world's best captain and we have lots of boys - fast boys - on our team which will be just lovely.  The last time all of us ladies ran... let's just say it was brutal, but Kath you looked good bringing us over the finish line lady!

Next post I'll report on the league, the run and the hubbie's sabbatical (he's in Portland for 5 weeks starting Monday. :0)).

    Deck Staining Pro-FESH-in-al

I must say thanks to everyone who offered their advice on my weekend deck staining project.  While none of you offered your assistance (no, I'm not holding any grudges) the advice was extremely helpful! :)

After a long Friday night (that's all I"ll say about that), I wasn't looking too forward to my weekend project, but once I pulled myself outta bed and hit Home Depot I got my second wind.  I spent about $200 on plants, deck stain, paint brushes, wasp spray, contractors rags, potting soil, plant food, organic fertilizer and I was set.  I got home, changed into a classic wife B, got the iPod set up on the Bose and went to work.  At first I was so meticulous, not letting one ounce of stain slop anywhere.  About half way through, I took a new approach.  Let's just get this bitch done!  I rocked through that bad boy and in the end she looks pretty damn good!  Even if I do say so myself.  :)

I'll attach a couple pics, as promised - a before and after so you can see my handy work.  You're right, Erika, I had a blast!  I think I'll take this weekend off and go play with friends.

    Three Months...really??

Has it really been almost three months since my last blog?  Gosh, those of you who just pine for my next entry must be just sick from my lack of writing.  I'll work on that.

Since my April entry...  Let's see what's been going on.  Dealing with contractors 3000 miles away, packing up our NY pad and leaving my most favorite city in the world, moving into our house in Portland and attempting to get settled in my new/old city but instead spending my weekends with friends camping, beaching, boating and attending the blessed nuptials of yes, more freinds.  It's been an eventful few months.  It's really hard to believe I'm back in the NW...

It's been hot as hell these last few days.  Not that I'm complaining.  This is nothing compared to the wet NYC summers, but a crib with no AC just plain sucks.  Brooklyn's doing well and adjusting to life back in Oregon.  He is a bit spoiled however, insisting on walks when he has a lovely backyard to stretch out in.  Okay, well it's not exactly the Taj Mahal, but it's a backyard nonetheless.  Oh well, I guess you can't take the city outta the dog.

Chris was back in Portland for the 4th and a wedding on what will always be known as Tony Parker and Eva Longoria's wedding day.  There was no Chateau in Paris or $30,000 wedding cake, but it was nice to see old friends.  Chris has gone back to New York for a few weeks, so this weekend I'll flex my new domestic muscle and attempt to stain our deck.  Not sure I know what I'm doing, but with two big brothers and a fantastic Lowe's website I feel pretty confident I can figure this out.  Tomorrow I'll clean that bad boy with 30 second miracle and then I'll bust out my staining gear first thing Saturday morning.  We shall see...

I know you're all coming back for the deck update.

    And the results are in...

No Coney Island dogs or cotton candy to report on, but lots of blisters and aching knees to tell you about.  The run went great.  It started at 8am on the boardwalk at Coney Island in Brooklyn.  It was a beautiful morning - sunny and not a cloud in the sky.  It was definitely cold, but gorgeous.  I ran well until about mile 8 when I started to hit a wall, by 10 I was struggling, then at mile 10.5 I got a second wind and kicked it out the rest of the race.  My official time is 2:29:53.  I'll take it!

    Brooklyn Half Marathon

is this weekend.  Actually tomorrow.  Am I ready?  No.  Am I excited?  Yes!  It starts on the boardwalk of Coney Island and ends in Prospect Park.  As long as the weather holds out, I think I'm in for a treat!  It's quite sad that this will be my last organized run while I'm living in New York City.  I know sob, sob...  I'm starting to get all nostalgic.  I do have lots of runs in Oregon to look forward to however, so instead of being sad I'll be excited for what the future holds.  Heck I've even got myself on a Hood to Coast team.  Thanks Linds!  :)

Okay, well I'm fully expecting to walk tomorrow, so I may not be posting any PR's here, but I'll certainly fill you in on all the Coney Island dogs and cotton candy I expect to consume afterwards!  ;)

    It's Been Too Long..

Since I posted a blog.  Wow, over two months.  What the heck have I been doing?  Let's see.. work, running, traveling back to Portland and Seattle, catching up with old friends in the City and just generally enjoying the New Year.  Hard to believe it's already Spring.  We've welcomed a couple of new bambino's already this year.  Becky and Scott had their second son this month and my best friend Jen and her husband Jim from Oregon also welcomed their first son this month.  Becky and Scott welcomed Casen Henry on March 22nd and Jen and Jim's son, Jacob Michael, was born on March 24th.  Casen seems to be a strapping young man and so handsome - CONGRATULATIONS EMMETT FAMILY!  Jacob was born 10 weeks early and is having some difficulties breathing on his own as he is quite premature.  Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Meurer family at this very hard time.

I've been enjoying lots of Spring runs in Central Park.  It's just a gorgeous time of year here in the City.  Chris and I are planning to do the Brooklyn Half-Marathon on April 14th.  I can't say I feel quite ready to knock out 13.1, but it starts at Coney Island and just sounds too fun to pass up (did I just say "too fun", "run" and "13.1 miles" in the same sentence??).  If I have to walk some, I have to walk.  Let's just hope we have a great day for it!  Other than that race, I'm planning to do the Helvetia Half in Oregon again this June and would like to get on a Hood to Coast team for the first time again in six years!  We shall see what the summer brings!

Here's a pic of the ladies and Fro (lucky dog you) at the Shamrock Run in Portland a couple of weeks ago.  What a great time and Linds you're a great running partner!  :)

It can't be that cold, can it?!

Upon awakening at 6:45am today it was 19 degrees and 7 with the wind chill.  Normally that wouldn't phase me on a winter morning in New York, but today wasn't one of those lucky Sunday's where I could snuggle back in bed and forget about the temps outside.  Nope, today was the Manhattan half marathon.  Of all the cold ass mornings, today had to be the coldest in quite sometime. CT and I layered like I've never layered before (Ralphie from the Christmas Story comes to mind here) and off we went for our 1.5 mile walk to the start line.  Folks it was flippin ass freezing!  We got to the start line with 5 minutes to spare and off we went.  I knew I wasn't going to run the whole 13.1 miles today, because I just ran a half last weekend and didn't want to push my already sore knees and blistered feet, so I started off with no expectations, just out for a nice Sunday stroll (yeah, right!!!).  Surprisingly, I had a good run.  I ran 7.5, then cut off to watch CT come across the finish line.  He finished his first half in 5 years at 1:47...not too shabby!  Of course, as soon as the times posted this afternoon he had to comb through every age group and make reference to a 68 year old man that beat his time.  Apparently an average 8:11 pace just isn't good enough for a 33 year old college athlete.  I wish I could feel sorry for him.  All day it's been random call out's, "man, 8:11", "can you believe I had an 8:11 pace. I'm going to have to work on that."  "I can't believe it, 8:11."  Poor CT. Well maybe next time he'll get the "almost 70 year old who beat me."   Here's the Bronx Half in February!  https://www.nyrr.org/races/2007/grandprix/bronx_reg.asp

    I survived yet another run

I think I am officially recovered from a run that just about killed this girl.  With tired legs, sore knees, chaffing and blisters I often wonder why I enjoy this sport we call running so much.  I guess it's the thrill of doing something that doesn't come naturally to me and succeeding.  Does that make sense?  Anyhoo, Phoenix was great!  So nice to see old friends and meet new ones.  And of course, I fell in love. I did.  It's true.  I am offically in love with cruisers.  The lovely beach bikes that come with big handle bars, baskets up front and a lovely little bell that we ring when we pass cute boys on the street.  I've put the picture of the hot pink number I was so blessed to ride below.  She was a champ.  Took me too and fro (did I just say Fro?) Mill Ave several times for cocktails and treats.  What a wonderful new obsession!  Oh yeah, back to the run.  I finished the half in 2:22:25, 16:06 minutes faster than my last half in June.  I think part of it was being more prepared on my end, but also Arizona is flat, flat, flat.  My last half was in the hills of Helvetia, and for those familiar,  we know those are some hills!  Well, whatever my time, I had a kick ass time!  I'm never in it to win it, I'm just in it to finish it.  Hobbling and all.  I do have to give props to my new found inspiration, Ted aka Rod, who kept me running all 13.1 miles and never let a smile slip from his face.  Ted, you da man!

    Cruiser - I miss you!

    December 03

    Holiday Run

So the weather has been incredibly warm in New York.  Unusually warm, especially for this time of year.  With that in mind I signed up for a 5 mile holiday run in CP.  I'm a wuss runner, so when I see rain, ice, temperatures below 40, I'm not so much taking a part in it.  I think its just since we moved to New York that I've gotten this way.  I'm thinking it has something to do with the 1/2 mile hike to the park, so if it's cold and raining, you're drenched or frozen by the time you even start.  Anyway, I digress.  So the holiday run.  Well Friday it was 70 degrees and humid as hell.  So not like any December 1st I've ever experienced in NYC.  Come around 5pm we get a tornado warning on the TV.  Huh?  A tornado??  Well I'm not sure if it was a tornado or not, but instantly the weather got horrible. The high winds, rain, thunder and lighting all brought about the cold temperatures for Saturday's run.  Good times.  I wake up at 7am to get ready and walk Brooklyn before I head 40 blocks to New York Road Runners to pick up my bib (Chris is in Portland, so I'm flying solo).  I walk out of my building with Brooklyn and BAM - it is absolutely FREEZING!  Okay.  I can handle this. Brooklyn gets his walk and then I try to figure out how to get across the park and up to 102nd with just my running clothes on and without freezing.  Mission impossible.  I brave the winds and finally make it to NYRR where the line is down the street and around the block (yes, I walked there).  Hmmm, I guess everybody had the same idea to pick up their number in the morning.  I finally wade through the line, get my number, tie my chip on shoe and throw my millionth racing shirt around my waist and off I go...10 more blocks to the start line.  By the time I make it to the start I am way beyond warmed up.  I'm thinking, shoot I'm ready to go home and call that a work out, but alas the gun goes off and away we go.  The run was great, probably the best 5 miles I've run in a long time.  For some reason I always seem to run faster, harder, longer on race day.  I was gunnin' for this old lady the last half mile, but she kept getting ahead of me and I was just out of steam.  Finally I turned on the turbos and made it across the finish before her.  Boy, that made my day!  Simple pleasures, right??  So with my apple and cup of water I start my trek back 40 blocks home.  It's amazing how good you feel after a great run.  The city was beautiful, sunny and crisp and buzzing with an incredible energy.  I don't think I've ever enjoyed the scenery so much, it really was a beautiful morning.  By the time I finally made it home I easily logged 10 miles.  I was tired, cold and sweaty, but have never felt better!  I'm so glad I didn't chicken out because the weather was cold, Chris was gone and I would have rather stayed in bed.  Enjoy your winter runs!!

    P.F. Changs...

No, not in reference to the yummy lettuce wraps, but the Phoenix half marathon.  January 14 I will embark on another running adventure.  This one is sure to be easier than the Helvetia half...those hills were a killer.  A great friend of mine also lives in Sun City, so looking forward to spending a long weekend with her as well.  Let's just hope I can stay away from Fat Tuesday's until AFTER the half. :) www.rnraz.com

    Birthday Girl

philosophy: be grateful to have been given one more day, let alone one more year. remember to dance in your nightgown, sing in the shower, ride a bike, fly a kite and take an occasional "wind bath" in your bare skin. give those you love big kisses, huge hugs, and the words "i love you" often and always. nurture your body rather than starve your soul with fad dieting. spend time with the old and the weary to better appreciate your life. on your birthday, call your mother and father wherever they are to thank them for all that they have done, even if you think they haven't done enough. watch the movie "life is beautiful" at least once a year. remember that you are not guaranteed tomorrow an that today is as good as it gets. thank god for every "thing", every "day", every moment.

    Where did the Summer go?

The Summer flew by, didn't it?!  I don't even know where it went.  Between work, vacations and time with friends and family we are now a few  days away from Fall. That blows my mind.  I'll include photos from the Summer - it was a good one... I think.  :O)
    June 29

    Shoot...I'm a slacker

It's already been three weeks since the half and I haven't even reported my results...did y'all think I stepped out for a run and didn't come back???  I know...awaiting the results with baited breath.  Well, I did well...I wanted to finish in under 2:30 and my time was 2:38, so not too shabby.  The hills of Helvetia got to me, I must say.  I train on some serious flat streets here in NY, so the mighty mountains crushed me, but nonetheless I finished.  Got my medal.  Skipped the tummy killer burger and partied my ass off that night.  Good times were had by all.

I think I like the distance of the half...I may need to find another to run soon.

    June 06

    Is it that time already???

It's hard to believe 12 weeks of training has come and gone and this weekend I'll be running the Helvetia Half Marathon in Oregon.  I'm getting excited, but I'm not quite sure I'm ready.  I did my last long run in the park this weekend...9 miles.  It wasn't too bad...and hey, I'm not in it to win it, I'm in it to finish it (and eat a really yummy burger at the end :)).

To all the lovely hills of Helvetia - watch out Treads is coming!

    Time for some TV talk

Okay.  I have to be one of those people...just for a few minutes anyway.  Two words: Grey's Anatomy!  Holy crap that was a good finale!  I cried when Doc, the dog, died...I cried when Denny, the critically ill heart transplant patient, died and I cried when the damn show ended.  Damn. Damn. Damn.  That is a good freakin' show.  Do you think Meredith will end up with Dr. McDreamy (can we talk about that sex scene - my goodness!!!)?  Will George fall in love with the gargantuan surgeon?  Does Cristina deserve Burke?  She WAS an awful girlfriend when he needed her most...sorry, I digress.  Will Izzie ever be the same with her dear Denny gone?  Will Alex get off vagina duty?  MAN ALIVE...how will I ever get through the summer with all these questions lingering in my brain.

    We'll miss you Denny!

David Blaine...A Hero In My Eyes

Jeez, watching the poor guy was like watching a train wreck...I couldn't turn the channel, I was glued to the stupid television.  Chris wanted to flip to the games, but I found myself saying "No, you can't - we have to see what happens to David" like he's close family or a long lost friend.  I felt so bad that he didn't make the 9 minutes holding his breath and then he started crying after he came out of the water...Chris likes to throw the "ohmigod" face at me when guys start crying, but jeez, he had just been submerged in water for 7 days and shackled to the bottom of this water bubble without being able to breathe for 7 minutes...I'd be freaking bawling.  Did you see his hands and feet...Egads.  Poor David Blaine.  You'll always be a hero in my eyes!

    I love New York

It's so great to be back in New York.  I feel like I've been on the road quite a bit so it was nice to cruise around the city this weekend.  David Blaine is up at Lincoln Center chillin' in a bubble of water and our favorite CP skaters were out this weekend.  I'm looking forward to summer in the city!  :0)
    April 30

    Six years ago...

Chris and I were in Maui getting married!  Holy crap, it's hard to believe how fast the time has gone by!  We had a great anniversary - the big trip was Dublin in February, but last night we hit a cool jazz place in the West Village, then threw back some pints of Heinie at a great Irish bar called Slane (had to do a cheers to the Celtic Tiger).  Couldn't have been better.

The running is going good.  The weather in NY is amazing right now, so before our big booze fest last night, we hit CP for a 6 miler.  It felt great to knock it out and the cold beer tasted so damn good after that run.

Work has been good, just a smidge on the busy side.  I'm headed back to the west coast tomorrow, Seattle until Friday, where I will undoubtedly be kickin' it with my boy Jay.  Can I get a...  Okay, I can dream right.

By Far My Best Celeb Sighting

COLIN FARRELL!  OMG - I was dying...he is absolutely the most gorgeous man alive...DEAR GOD!  He was standing outside smoking at a restaurant in the Village, I wanted to do a double take so bad, but COME ON, I didn't want to be a chump, then he started talking and I almost fell to my knees...that accent.  OH BOY!  He was wicked hot and whoa...that was the best celeb sighting yet!!!  :0)

I think I officially *heart* Colin!
